Hello,my name is Jim and I have never drag raced before. I do not know the classes, rules, ect. I am putting a 65 Chevelle together to race at Onondaga. It is nothing special other than it is an old drag car from back in the day. It sat outside forever and is in very rough shape bodywise and it was stripped other than it still has the ladder bars and driveshaft hoop. I am building a 355,TH350 and have the 10 bolt that is in it or I have a 12 bolt sitting in the garage as well. I am getting a pr ofCragar soft 8 wheels with 29.5X10.5 15 in MT ET Drag tires to put on the rear. I still need to figure out the rear diff gearing, ect. I am planning on installing an 8 pt roll cage in it for safety and to help stiffen the frame. Still need to get a set of headers for exhaust and I am wondering if I will need to run mufflers and if so what type. I have a set of3in flowmaster style mufflers. any and all advice, suggestions criticisms welcomed. Jim

I would say as far as rules and safety your best bet is to get ahold of a NHRA or IHRA rulebook concerning safety equipment. Most is listed in those as far as what is needed for how fast (either MPH or ET) for your car.
This is a huge file so it might take a while to open it from the site.

I would imagine if you follow those safety rules you should be fine as far as pretty much any drag-strip you visit.
The parts and how much safety depends how how fast you are going to go, and how deep your pockets are.
Guaranteed no matter how fast it is the first pass, you will want it to be faster. Keep that in mind when building it :)

OK,so i have been reading through the book but still wondering where my car is going to fit. maybe you could narrow it down for me as to what class this will fit.
I am running a 65 Chevelle 2dr sedan. Looking for a stock hood or fibreglass hood, going to build a dsah as the one in the car was trashed. Making it from sheetmetal with minium guages needed,355 SBC with th350 auto and a 10 or 12 bolt rear diff and ladder bars. heads are cast iron double humps with 2.02 intakes, solid lift roller cam with around 560 lift,12-1 forged pistons, aluminum GRP rods,Scat cast crank, victor intake with 750 dbl pump Holley. 29x10.50 15 in ET Drag tires, single seat,no carpeting,no door stock door panels but will have metal covering them, stock wheel wells other than interior wheel lips,no inner fender wells in front, roll cage. really nothing fancy. did i leave anything out? ANy idea as to what class i am close to fitting in so I can zero in as to what i need to do with this car? thanks in advance for your help, advice, ect. Jim

I would say build it as a 10.00 quarter mile safety, general bracket car, if you go faster, giggle a ton and save up to upgrade some safety equiptment, if you dont go that fast, it gives ya a nice goal.

"giggle alot" LOL Yes that would be worth a giggle. :) So I need to look through the rule book for a general safety bracket car that does 10.00 or slower. I would imagine that with this car stripped down like it is that may be a doable goal depending on the engine and whether I can get it to hook up. I need to find out what gear i should try and run. I am thinking of running a spool as this car won't be run on the street. Just not sure about gearing with 29.5 tires. any ideas or suggestions?
